Two days after the most recent airline disaster, Investigators are still gathering information to determine what caused the Air France flight AF447 crash. French investigators who will be publishing the preliminary report by the end of June said that there was no evidence of technical problems with the aircraft before takeoff.

According to the Paul-Louis Arslanian, Director of the body conducting the inquiry, the information they have gathered so far is patchy and won’t show when and where the crash occured. Investigators also are not optimistic that they will find the black boxes, which record cockpit data and pilot communication which could be helpful in finding out what cause the airline disaster.

There were 228 people aboard when the plane went down (There is one Filipino). Debris from Airbus SAS A330-200 aircraft were found about 650 kilometers northeast of Brazil’s Fernando De Noronha Island. Brazil and France have already dispatched spotter planes, helicopters and navy vessels to locate the plane. The U.S. military also assists in the search.

The question now is “who is guilty?” on this Airline disaster.

Actually, America’s decision will be a point of considerable debate in the next day and maybe even days beyond that — with just under 100 million votes cast, dark horse Kris Allen beat out Adam Lambert, who for weeks has been considered the all-but-inevitable champ.

This is the biggest upset in eight seasons. The result was an even bigger surprise considering that — as even Kris’s supporters would concede — Adam gave the stronger performance on the Tuesday performance show. Simon anointed him a “worldwide star.”

Apparently stunned by the news of his victory, Kris couldn’t help but stammer, “Adam deserves this.”
Oh, please! Adam was the most acclaimed Idol contestant ever, but also one of the most divisive.
At any rate, it was an exciting jolt at the end of a long two hours. The show started with the 13 season finalists dressed in white, as if they had just died and were arriving in the afterlife.

Then came a series of duets between finalists and seasoned stars, generally to good results: Adam, in tooled black leather with wire wings as epaulets, had a great medley with Kiss, and Kris grooved comfortably and lightly with Keith Urban on “Kiss a Girl.” Megan Joy and Michael Sarver dueted on a sweet little song by Steve Martin called “Pretty Flowers” (with Martin on banjo).

The best moment of all may have been Allison Iraheta joined by Cyndi Lauper on “Time After Time” — it was unexpectedly touching, and made me wonder whether Allison wasn’t better than Adam or Kris (although I had been rooting for Kris through most of the season).

There were also the joshing Golden Idol awards, which were an opportunity to bring back Nick Mitchell, a.k.a Norman Gentle, and Katrina Darrell, a.k.a Bikini Girl, still in a bikini but filling out the top part with a great deal more confidence. She was joined by Kara on Mariah Carey’s “Vision of Love.” (Kara turned out to be a much better vocalist than judge.) And Tatiana del Toro, in a ridiculous joke, stormed the stage and had to be removed by security. Enough!

MANILA, Philippines – Freddie Roach wants Shane Mosley for Manny Pacquiao but only if the WBA welterweight champion agrees to drop down to 142 pounds.

As of now, the answer from the aging but raging champion from Pomona, California, is a big no.

“Mosley fight is probably the most exciting because they both like to fight,” Pacquiao’s trainer, told David Avila of The Sweet Science in a recent interview.

Roach said Pacquiao couldn’t fight Mosley at 147 pounds because he may be too small for the 5-foot-9 champion by the time they climb the ring a day after the weigh-in.

Pacquiao weighed in at 142 pounds and climbed the ring at 148 1/2 for a welterweight fight with Oscar dela Hoya last December, then weighed in at 138 pounds and climbed the ring at 148 against Ricky Hatton two weeks ago.

The result was phenomenal as Pacquiao showed the quickness he had even when he was fighting at 126, 130 or 135 pounds, and the power even greater.

Roach wants the same formula for Pacquiao if ever he gets to face Mosley next.

“I have to protect my fighter. I spoke to Shane and told him that we would fight him at 142. He said he can’t make that weight,” Roach said from his Wild Card Gym in LA.

Mosley, according to The Sweet Science, “asked why not 147 as was set for De La Hoya at 147?” and Roach answered by saying, “Mosley is not De La Hoya in terms of setting a weight handicap.”

Another big fighter who wants a fight with Pacquiao is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. But the son of the legendary fighter from Mexico wants Pacquiao at 150 pounds.

Pacquiao isn’t interested.

“Masyado na ’yan (That’s too much),” he said when told of Chavez’ challenge hurled by his promoter, Fernando Beltran.

“If he thinks he’s Superman, then let him fight Chavez Jr. He’s beaten the great Mexican boxers (Morales, Barrera and Marquez) but there’s still a Mexican who can beat him,” Beltran said.

Roach also talked about Floyd Mayweather Jr., who takes on Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18, and probably Pacquiao next, even if there’s already an early disagreement on the terms of the fight.

The weight shouldn’t be an issue, probably a catch weight of around 142 pounds, but it’s the money.

Mayweather wants a 60-40 split in his favor and Roach said it just wouldn’t happen. The trainer said it could take place if it’s the other way around.

“Even 50-50 with Mayweather is nonsense,” said Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum.

LOS ANGELES – Blessedly, “Angels & Demons” is more entertaining and less self-serious than its predecessor, the dense and dreary yet enormously successful “The Da Vinci Code.”

In adapting another of author Dan Brown’s religious-mystery page turners, director Ron Howard wisely gave in to its beat-the-clock thriller elements, which makes for a more enjoyable summer movie experience. The brouhaha has long since abated among Catholics, albinos, “Da Vinci Code” purists, what have you, and all that’s left is air-conditioned escapism.

But its twists, turns and revelations are just as ridiculous as those in the first film _ perhaps even more so _ and it breezes through arcane details with just as much dizzying speed.

Besides Howard, the key players are back from that 2006 international hit, including Tom Hanks as Harvard professor and symbologist Robert Langdon and Akiva Goldsman as screenwriter (with David Koepp collaborating on the script). Joining them are Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgaard and Armin Mueller-Stahl among the estimable supporting cast, all of whom have enjoyed the benefits of stronger material but manage to supply gravitas nonetheless.

Although “Angels & Demons” preceded “The Da Vinci Code” in book form, the film is positioned as a sequel to take advantage of the strained relationship between Langdon and the Vatican _ only this time, it’s his expertise the folks there reluctantly need.

With the pope dead and the College of Cardinals about to meet in conclave to choose a replacement, a secret society known as the Illuminati has kidnapped the four likeliest candidates. Howard and cinematographer Salvatore Totino, who also shot “The Da Vinci Code,” cloak all these proceedings in dark, ominous shadows, and Hans Zimmer’s score rather obviously adds to the feeling of foreboding.

Langdon is brought in to decipher clues at various churches and historical sites throughout Rome to prevent the killing of the cardinals, one every hour, leading to a bomb explosion at the Vatican. He gets help along the way from Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), an Italian scientist who worked at the lab where the combustible vial of anti-matter was stolen for the planned attack. Her arrival also allows for such standard action-picture dialogue as, “Can you deactivate the device?”

Never mind that Vittoria is sexy and mysterious, not middle-aged and frumpy. (And we gotta say, Hanks is looking pretty good here, too. The first time we see him, he’s tanned and trim, swimming laps in a Speedo in the Harvard pool.) Never mind that the time frame is impossible _ that they must dash across the city at night, with its narrow streets and tourist traps packed with visitors, in time to stop each killing. And never mind that one person appears to be responsible for orchestrating these elaborate and very public deaths.

But wait, we haven’t even gotten to the most laughable part of the story yet! We won’t give it away entirely for those who haven’t read the book. We’ll just say it involves an exploding helicopter and a crucial character parachuting out of it just in time. Because it is summer, after all, despite the aura of religious solemnity.

“Angels & Demons,” a Columbia Pictures release, is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence, disturbing images and thematic material. Running time: 138 minutes. Two stars out of four.

During the afternoon press briefing, ABC’s Jake Tapper remarked that President Obama “opposed same-sex marriage but supports giving same-sex couples the same rights as married couples.”

“With benefits,” Gibbs said without objecting to Tapper’s statement.

Many say Obama’s position on same-sex marriage is the same as the one Miss California, Carrie Prejean, took a lot of heat for.

“I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think it should be between a man and a woman,” she said at the Miss USA pageant last month.

What’s the difference between her statement and the president’s? Nothing according to Prejean and impressario Donald Trump.

“It’s the same answer that the president of the United States gave,” Trump said at a press conference on Tuesday to announce Prejean would keep her title. “She gave an honorable answer. She gave an answer from her heart.”

Prejean concurred. “The president of the United States, the secretary of state, and many Americans agree with me in this belief,” she said.

Obama

If you look at past statements made by Obama, the positions do look similar. You can go back to this 2007 Chicago Tribune article:

“I’m a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman,” he said.

2008 campaign

Or you can look at his comments made during the 2008 presidential campaign when asked by Saddleback church Pastor Rick Warren to define marriage.

“I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman,” the future President said. “For me as a Christian, it is a sacred union. You know, God is in the mix.”

“I am not someone who supports same-sex marriage but I do believe in civil unions,” he later added.
