Are you trying to get your street racer or your show car insured? Has your been modified with full body kits, exhaust system upgrades, bumpers rear/ front added, engine changes, cars with tuning.. If your answer to these questions is yes, then you will probably have a hard time getting it done. What you’ll need though is a Modified car insurance.
What is a Modified Car Insurance?
Modified car insurance is (obviously) an insurance designed to provide protection to personalized,
modified or altered vehicles. Modifications usually include alloy wheels with locking nuts, tinted glass, engine improvements, fitted turbo, bucket seats, gear knob changes and size and capacity of engines.
Is there such a thing as a cheap modified car insurance ?
Accept it folks, if you own a high performance vehicle, most likely you will need to pay higher rates compared to having a Sedan or SUV. Why? Because insurers know that generally, modified cars are involved in more claims, there’s a high possibility that it’s gonna be involved in an accident (God forbid). This may have something to do with the fact that modified car drivers are usually young drivers. Did you know that there are insurance companies that won’t insure the modified car unless the registered driver is 25 years old and above? The normal eligibility age though is 21 years old.
Another reason why car insurance for modified ones are more expensive is that they are more attractive to thieves which puts the insurer at greater risk. Modifications will also increase the value of the vehicle which means if ever the vehicle gets involved in an accident, in the event of a claim the insurer will need to pay out more.
Things that you can do to save money on your Modified car insurance cover :
- Check online – It doesn’t matter if you want to use Google, Bing or Yahoo, Check insurers’ website and compare the prices as cover premiums can greatly vary from companies to companies. You can do this by using a car insurance calculator .
- Drive safely – This can or may reduce the cost of your premiums as years passes by because you’re most likely to receive a no claim bonus in every year that you don’t make a claim on your policy.
- Limit your modifications – Well, i’m not sure if this is even possible for some modified car owners but more modifications means highermodified car insurance rates.
